A MAJOR link road to the M53 motorway in Wirral will be shut for four weeks for repair work.
An improved Bidston Moss viaduct is a step closer now the first phase of strengthening work is nearing completion, with phase two due to start on Friday, July 15.
During this next phase, which is expected to last a month, the northbound M53 link onto the A5139 Docks Link Road and the northbound carriageway of A5139 Docks Link Road to Poulton Bridge Road roundabout will be closed.
Highways Agency project manager Graham Dakin said: "During this next phase of works, motorists will have to be especially careful to exit the M53 at junction one unless they intend to travel into the Kingsway tunnel.
"These closures are needed to provide a safe working area for the workforce and to ensure the safety of road users."
Once the whole scheme is complete in spring 2012, the improvements to the viaduct, which is part of the main route into the Kingsway Tunnel under the River Mersey, will lift the current weight restrictions, helping to reduce congestion and improveing lighting and drainage.
Motorists are advised to ahead, leave extra time for their journeys and to register for free updates on the roadworks by registering on the homepage at www.highways.gov.uk/roads/projects/5860.aspx.
