Youth club attendance soars in Wirral by more than 60 per cent

THE number of young people attending youth clubs and activities in Wirral has soared.

A total of 8,625 young people went along to sessions compared to 5,347 the year before, a rise of more than 60%.

The increase follows a shake-up of the Youth Service which included the introduction of the Youth Hubs.

The new Youth Hubs at Shaftesbury Youth Club, Birkenhead, Wallasey Fire Station, Eastham and West Kirby are now open over five evenings, including Friday and Saturday.

They were introduced after young people said they wanted better youth facilities at better times and would not mind travelling to get there.

Cllr Ann McLachlan, cabinet member for children’s services, said: "It indicates that Youth Hubs were the right thing to do."
