Clatterbridge hospital’s radio station celebrates 60th birthday

A HOSPITAL radio station which claims to have broadcast the first interview with The Beatles celebrated its 60th birthday.

Radio Clatterbridge marked the event by replaying some special broadcasts it made for patients and staff at Clatterbridge Hospital since 1951.

Former Radio Merseyside presenter Monty Lister, who began his career at the hospital station, was a special guest at the weekend event.

He recorded an early interview with The Beatles in 1962, shortly after Ringo Starr joined and before the release of Love Me Do.

The station was formed when young members of the Port Sunlight Boys’ Club took a pile of 78 records and a portable gramophone around Pensby Ward.

Programme controller Paul Johnston said: “We put a lot of work in to ensure our birthday celebrations would go off with a bang.”
