Bidston residents distressed as sewers overflow

RESIDENTS of School Lane in Bidston were furious on Monday after enduring three days of stinking sewer waters all over their road after a main sewer became blocked.

United Utilities were contacted on Saturday and residents told the problem would be dealt with within four hours.

However, by Monday there was still no sign despite being assured by the company that they were a ‘priority.’

Resident Pete Crawford said: “There has been all sorts spilling down the road and it is now a health and safety issue.

“There are a number of children who play in the road and also elderly residents.

“One lady has just come out of hospital and having her road full of sewage is not healthy.”

United Utilities confirmed that the problem would be dealt with.

They said: “We are extremely sorry about this.

“Sewer flooding is really unpleasant and in the vast majority of cases we are able to respond within a few hours to sort the problem out and clean up.

‘‘On Saturday we had an extremely high level of calls from customers following the intensely heavy rain across much of our region

“One of our clean-up gangs will be there today (Monday) to remove the blockage and carry out a thorough clean up.

“This should clear any lingering smell and hopefully prevent it happening again.”
