Bodies could be exhumed from grounds of a Wirral church

DOZENS of bodies could be exhumed from the grounds of a Wirral church.

St Nicholas’ Church in Burton is consulting over plans to build a single-storey extension to create a new meeting room.

Visitors to the Georgian church currently have to use an outside toilet and the new facility would include two toilets.

But it would mean disturbing the last resting place of some of those buried in the church graveyard.

Church authorities said they wanted to deal with the issue sensitively and were consulting thoroughly with relatives.

Reverend Cathy Helm, the Vicar of St Nicholas’s Church, said the plan was the “only viable option”.

The proposed extension is understood to affect around 20 graves, which the church says are older plots.
