Student at Wirral’s Woodchurch high school got her arm stuck in desk

A Wirral schoolgirl had to be rescued by firefighters after becoming stuck to her desk.

The 15-year-old pupil unwittingly became part of the furniture as she sat in a class at Woodchurch high school.

The teenager’s painful ordeal was triggered after she got her arm lodged in the hole on her desk designed to allow computer cables to feed through.

In her struggle to free herself her arm began to swell meaning she was wedged in. When it became clear she was unable to set herself free, the Carr Bridge Road school took the drastic decision to call in firefighters.

A crew from Upton led by watch manager Chris Wilkinson came to the girl’s rescue and eventually set her free after a 25 minute operation. They used cutting equipment to trim off part of her blazer and blouse before using grease to tease the arm loose at around 2pm last Wednesday.

The student was taken to Arrowe Park hospital as a precaution, but was back in school at the end of the week.

Confirming the incident Upton fire station watch manager, Andy Blythe said: "It is not something we normally get called out for."

Headteacher Rebekah Phillips thanked the fire crews and ambulance for their "fast response and understanding".
