Rare birds expected in Wirral this week

KEEP your eyes peeled this week for beautiful brightly-coloured waxwings visiting Wirral as they migrate south.

Intent on only one thing – eating – flocks of beautiful waxwings have stripped countless berry trees across Scotland, and with sightings in the local area this weekend, flocks could reach Wirral this week.

Visitors from Russia and Scandinavia, waxwings are a pink bird about the size of a starling, with a crest and yellow and black ‘waxy’ markings on their wing feathers.

The popularity of their favourite rowan berries in urban areas mean the colourful characters often fly in to local supermarket car parks or even school playgrounds.

To help them feed, avoid cutting berry-laden trees such as cotaneaster and rowan or ‘mountain ash’.
