Flat fire in Wallasey prompts rescue of mother and son

A MOTHER and son were rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital after a blaze broke out at their home.

The pair were rescued from their second- floor flat in Seabank Road, Wallasey, via an external staircase.

A mother and daughter in a different flat were rescued by passers-by and another resident escaped on his own before emergency services arrived.

Crews from Wallasey, Birkenhead, Upton and Bromborough were called to the scene, described by one firefighter as “utter chaos”, just before 7.40am yesterday.

The mother and son, both understood to be adults, were taken to Arrowe Park Hospital where they were treated for smoke inhalation.

Watch manager Darin Speed, of Wallasey, said: “When we arrived it was utter chaos. There were lots of people about and smoke was coming out of every window on all three floors.

“The crews reacted in an extremely quick and professional manner which led to saving the lives of the two people in the top floor flat.”

An investigation is under way.
