THE family of a Rock Ferry soldier killed in Afghanistan are paying tribute to him by organising their own Wirral coastal walk.
Private Douglas Halliday died in June when the vehicle he was travelling in overturned into the Nahr-e Bughra canal. Just 20 years old, he was serving in his first tour of Afghanistan with the Mercian 1 Regiment.
The 15-mile walk, from Seacombe Ferry to Thurstaston Country Park, will take place on September 19.
Proceeds will go to forces charity, Help for Heroes.
Pte Halliday’s family said the walk was a mark of respect for him, the three soldiers who died in the same incident and fallen soldiers past and present.
They said: “Dougie was deeply loved by all of his family and friends, he bought so much love and laughter into our lives.
“We are all extremely privileged to have shared his short life.
“We remember Dougie for his charm, the special times together and his humour. He will never be forgotten.”
