First parliamentary contirbution from Wirral’s new MPs

WIRRAL’S new MPs made their first contributions in the House of Commons last week.

Alison McGovern, newly elected Labour representative for Wirral South, chose to make her debut during a debate on European affairs, while Wirral West’s new Conservative member of Parliament, Esther McVey, opened her account with a question for new Minister for Justice, Nick Herbert MP.

Esther asked: “A constituent of mine, Jean Taylor, set up the charity, Families Fighting for Justice, after the murder of her son and daughter.

“Can the Minister assure her, and many others in similar situations, that these charities, which are filling the gaps in the justice system to provide support for victims of crime, will have sufficient transparency and lines of communication open to his Department in order to carry out their work?”

Mr Herbert responded by telling Esther he wanted to “ensure that such groups have a voice”.

Alison McGovern praised the work of her predecessor, Ben Chapman and focused on the value of culture to the region.

She said: “Our culture is an asset.
