Domestic violence cases increased by a third during 2006 World Cup

DOMESTIC abuse incidents in Wirral increased by a third during the 2006 World Cup and police will devote extra resources to avoid a repeat this month.

Four years ago, officers received reports of 134 domestic violence offences between June 9 and July 9 2006, of which 68 involved alcohol.

The following year, during the same period and with no World Cup playing out, that number dropped substantially to 85 incidents, of which 26 involved alcohol.

And police say they are determined to work with other agencies to get the message across, and ensure those suffering do not increase in volume again.

Superintendent Mike Cloherty said: “Domestic abuse can take many guises and can be physical, psychological, sexual, financial or emotional. We want sufferers, their families, friends and neighbours to recognise when abuse is taking place and know that help is available to those involved via a range of support agencies, from the point they report it, and any subsequent court proceedings.

“Working together with our partners, we are wholly committed to reducing incidents of domestic abuse across Merseyside, increasing the number of arrests and bringing those responsible to justice.

“Victims are not to blame and should not suffer in silence.

“We urge anyone who needs help and support to come forward and report abuse so we can take action against those responsible.”
