THE RSPCA is appealing for help after seeing a summer slump in the number of abandoned and stray cats being re-homed.
In Wirral the charity found homes for 650 cats last year – a rate of more than 12 a week.
The average time cats spend in the RSPCA’s centre in Cross Lane, Wallasey before being found a new owner is just 19 days.
But the number going to new homes has slowed dramatically since Easter.
Staff are currently caring for 71 cats and kittens, filling all available pens in the cattery, and more are being kept at veterinary practices until space can be found.
The problem has been exacerbated because so many stray cats are found with litters of kittens, placing an extra strain on resources.
