Wirral high school pupils top of the league for good behaviour

HIGH school pupils in Wirral have been named the best behaved in the country.

Secondary schools in the borough found themselves on top of government league tables thanks to the proportion of pupils showing exemplary behaviour in class.

Measures including instilling self discipline and making pupils relax were among reasons cited for the good manners of Wirral’s students.

The newly-published data from the department of children, schools and families laid bare the standard of behaviour across the country’s secondaries.

The official government statistics charted schools whose behaviour was judged as part of their latest Ofsted inspections.

The statistics also revealed the percentage of high schools who managed to secure the education inspectorate’s highest grade of outstanding for behaviour.

Based on the figures, Wirral officially had no rival and smashed the efforts of schools nationally.

Of all schools inspected, more than two-thirds – 68.2% – received the top behaviour grade.

That compared with just 25.3% nationwide and 26.5% across the North West.

Wirral schools classed as having outstanding pupil behaviour included Upton Hall school for girls.

The school successfully puts pupils in the right frame of mind by giving them access to yoga and relaxation techniques and teaching pupils in a calming woodlands outdoor classroom.

Assistant headteacher Ann Spears said helping pupils develop “a sense of self discipline” and nurturing “self respect and respect for others” also boosted behaviour.
