A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was found sitting outside his Liverpool home bleeding heavily.
When he was found, sitting on the ground between two parked cars, he still had his wallet and mobile phone.
That is prompting detectives to presume he was not attacked as his belongings had not been stolen.
It appears Mr Hodgson suffered his injuries in Rathbone Road, but managed to stagger a further 50 yards around the corner to his home.
Stunned neighbours told the ECHO Mr Hodgson had been drinking that night at his local pub The Wellington, in the High Street.
Friends said he was a man who liked a drink, smoke and his cigar and lived with his wife Kathy.
Grey-haired Mr Hodgson is said to be slightly frail and locals said he used to work as a postman.
One neighbour said: “Everybody knows George. He and his wife keep themselves to themselves.
“We sometimes see him painting the front of his house.
“It’s shocking if somebody’s attacked him, as he’s quite elderly and is no threat to anybody”.
Anyone who saw anything or has information about what happened is asked to call Admiral Street CID on 0151 777 5394 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
