Woman suffers serious burns in Birkenhead house fire

A WOMAN suffered serious burns in a blaze at her house in Birkenhead.

The victim managed to escape the burning house in Upper Brassey Street, Birkenhead, at around 12.45am on Monday after a fire broke out in a bedroom.

The injured woman, named locally as Paula and in her 30s, managed to wake a neighbour and firefighters were called.

She was treated with oxygen as she lay in the street and was then taken to Arrowe Park Hospital before being transferred to the specialist burns unit at Whiston Hospital.

She suffered burns to her face, chest and upper arms, along with smoke inhalation.

A neighbour said: “She knocked at my door and said ‘Help me, my house is on fire’.

“Her hair was singed and she seemed in shock. She said ‘I need to get back inside’ as the smoke was pouring out of the house.”

An investigation team went into the house to establish the cause of the fire, which severely damaged the bedroom and was possibly caused by a candle. The woman is thought to have been asleep at the time it broke out.

Watch manager Des McDonald said: “When we arrived the lady was already outside the property. We gave first aid and remained with her until the ambulance arrived.”
