Expanded Google Street View now takes in Wirral

GOOGLE’S Street View cameras have finally made it through the Mersey Tunnel, and all over Wirral!

The service, developed by the internet behemoth, allows users to explore towns and cities around the world as if they were actually wandering the streets.

Liverpool and 24 other UK cities have been included since March last year, but the cameras stopped at the entrance to the Mersey tunnel and went no further.

Ever since, Wirralians have had to make do with satellite and bird’s eye view technology if they want a view of their home, or other local sights, while sat in front of their computer.

But no longer!

Now, with a few clicks of a mouse, anyone can explore the peninsula - from the backstreets of Birkenhead to the country village charm of Frankby.

The changes mean more than 238,000 miles of public road are now available on the Google Maps website, allowing the UK to join France, Spain, Italy and the USA in enjoying national coverage.

All of Wirral’s main urban centres are now featured, allowing you to stroll down the waterfront in New Brighton, West Kirby and Meols, or look for footballers’ houses in Caldy.

Google geospatial technologist, Ed Parsons said: “Street View takes mapping to a new level not possible before.”

The images are collected by Google’s Street View car, using a special camera that records a 360 degree view as the vehicle drives around each particular area.
