Wirral News readers name borough’s top ten pothole problem areas

ARE these Wirral’s worst road surfaces?

Last week we reported that Wirral Council was planning to spend £250,000 to deal with pothole problems caused by road surfaces deteriorating in icy conditions and continual gritting in some places.

We asked you to send in pothole problems in your area – and here are the top ten:

1. Coventry Street, Birkenhead town centre

2. St John Street, Birkenhead town centre

3. Leominster Road, Wallasey

4. Ashfield Road/Dawpool Lane, Bromborough

5. Mill Hill Road, Irby

6. Palatine Road, Bromborough

7. Ellen’s Lane, Port Sunlight

8. Tower Road, Heswall

9. Well Lane leading to Baskerville Road, Gayton

10. Village Road/Thurstaston Road/Delavor Road, Heswall

Nominating Ellen’s Lane, Robin Newby from Bebington said: “Once again there is a huge Pot Hole, so deep it's below the surface of the original cobbled stones.

“Whilst walking I have been able to point out this one and there are three others in the same dip under the narrow bridge.”

Chris Clifford from Bromborough said: “To say Palatine Road in Bromborough is appalling is putting it lightly.”

Dave D’Arcy from Moreton said: “Two particularly bad roads are Coventry Street and St. John Street in Birkenhead.

“Even before the ice they were extremely bad. They're even worse now. “They are access roads between Oliver Street car park that take delivery lorries, to the shops, so they take heavy wear.

“I defy anyone to go along Coventry Street without hitting a pothole.”

A spokesman for Wirral Council said a programme was in place to repair potholes, with main roads being prioritised, and repairs were being carried out seven days a week.

She said: “People are encouraged to ring and let us know if there are any potholes in their street or roads they are concerned about.”
