Prenton couple left stranded in Peru after floods devastate area

A WIRRAL couple were left stranded in Machu Picchu, Peru, after floods devastated the area.

Maureen and David Sayer, from Prenton had been on a trip of a lifetime and had visited the famous Inca ruins before torrential rail hit the region last week.

They managed to stay safe at their hotel but saw two dead bodies of a backpacker and guide carried off the Inca Trail by Army rescuers.

They were stuck in the country for seven days but were finally expected home as the News went to press on Tuesday.

In e-mails sent to friends back home, David wrote: “There have been floods and landslides and now the road is closed due to a landslide and 30 metres of the track has been washed away / damaged, therefore, we are stranded.

“Thankfully we are still in our hotel unlike up to 2,000 people who are stranded in the town’s railway station, stadium or municipal building.

“In the town below things are now getting more serious with food and water running out and people sleeping wherever they can.”
