PLANS to transform Bromborough tip into an outdoor pleasure park have won government money.
The Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) has offered the Forestry Commission almost £2.4m to regenerate the old Bromborough waste landfill site.
A formal announcement giving the final green light was made at a meeting at Bromborough civic centre last week.
The plan, put together under the Newlands programme and the Mersey Coastal Park Strategy, will include extensive landscaping.
Trees and grass will be planted, benches, paths and cycle tracks laid, and an “iconic sculpture” erected at the new park’s highest point.
Bromborough councillor Steve Niblock said: “After many years of putting up with the inconvenience of the tip, we are now starting to see consultation with the local community about the site.
“It is welcome that £2.3m has been given by the NWDA to provide enhancements.
“Clearly, other funding will be required for things such as an iconic sculpture that links our heritage and the local communities of New Ferry, Port Sunlight and Bromborough Pool.
“I’m looking forward to hearing about how these additional embellishments on the tip will be funded.”
Wirral South MP Ben Chapman said: “Art features will go with the already stunning panoramic views from the summit of the River Mersey and the Liverpool skyline.
“My constituents living in the vicinity had, for a long time, to endure a catalogue of landfill-associated unpleasantries – diminishing views, noise, flies, odours, rodents and other inconvenience.
“The NWDA’s decision is an important milestone, and I am absolutely delighted.
“The grass is growing and the whole area will be transformed.”
