Wirral’s bid to avoid “Canary Wharf effect” for Wirral Waters project

The Birkenhead and Wirral Waters Integrated Regeneration Study will be undertaken by GVA Grimley Consultants, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2010.

It will be used as the basis for planning, integrating Wirral Waters with neighbouring areas and Birkenhead town centre, and to “guide the investment of external financial resources with the aim of regenerating the study area and revitalising failing housing markets”.

It will be overseen by the leaders of the three main political parties, along with cabinet members.

Local councillors and officers from the council, NWDA and other local and regional organisations will also be involved in overseeing the study.

When it submitted the planning application, Peel said it expected the scheme to act as the catalyst to transform the local economy and regenerating seriously deprived areas around the docklands.

The £120,000 cost of the study will be paid from Investment Strategy funding and the Housing Market Renewal Initiative.
