Members angry over bar closure at Birkenhead’s Lauries Centre
One member, Gavin Fallow said: “They’ve done nothing to increase the membership and didn’t even ask people whether they were members when they went into the members bar.
“At certain times it can be quiet, but after 8pm it’s busy.
“They never came to us and said this is a problem and we feel they’ve discouraged members from rejoining.
“We just think there is something more to this.
“If it was losing money, why close it right before Christmas?”
Members have drawn up a petition in a last ditch attempt to stop closure, and accumulated 65 signatures.
They also say they tried to set up a meeting last week.
Danny Doyle expressed regret that he hadn’t heard members’ suggestions sooner.
He said: “This was spoken about some six months ago, and the board had to make a decision.
“A month ago signs went up in the members bar and now here we are in the week of closure and they’re making these suggestions.
“What a pity all these things couldn’t have been looked at in the past when we shouted fire.”
