The soldier was also looking forward to getting to see his long-term girlfriend, Emma Murray. The couple were planning to buy a house together when he returned.
Mrs Mullin read from a prepared statement from Cpl Boote’s parents.
She said: “They feel robbed of their only son, but are aware he was doing something he truly believed in and are extremely proud.
“No parents could be more proud of a son. Everyone who knew Steven knew he lived life to the full.
“He had endless enthusiasm in everything he did, and left an everlasting impression on everyone he met.
“We shall miss his smile and his cheeky nature and are saddened he will not be on leave in December – he planned to celebrate his birthday and have an early Christmas.
“Instead, we will be mourning at his funeral.
“Tony, Margaret and Emma would like to thank everyone for their support and ask people to support the Help For Heroes charity – it was a cause close to Steven’s heart.”
The family’s house is now full of flowers and cards from well-wishers, some of whom got in touch for the first time in years.
