Wallasey School honoured by Wirral mayor for Grease TV theatre success

Wallasey school pupils who performed in Grease

THE Mayor of Wirral held a special reception to celebrate the achievements of Wallasey pupils who became stars on the West End stage.

Wallasey School in Leasowe won a televised competition to perform the hit musical ‘Grease’ at a London theatre, beating 500 other schools to the top prize.

Welcoming the students to Wallasey Town Hall on Friday, Councillor Andrew Hodson said he and his Mayoress Kathryn Hodson had been "riveted" by the series, which aired on Sky One.

Filmed over the summer, it followed the progress of the group as they worked with top performers - including Duncan James from Blue, Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child and Liverpool singer Ray Quinn - on their singing and acting.

Other collaborators included voice coach Zoe Tyler, choreographer Stacy Hynes and former Strictly Come Dancing Judge Arlene Phillips.

Cllr Hodson said: " It was gripping television, and the students really did Wirral proud. The reception is our way of recognising their achievements."

Wallasey School headteacher Philip Duffy flew back from his summer holiday in Italy to watch the students' final performance of Grease.

He said: "It was an amazing and very emotional experience. The series was actually extended because it proved so popular, it was such a big success with Sky and with viewers.

"As well as boosting the profile and reputation of our school, it has proved a springboard for individual talent as we have pupils who have now been offered places at stage schools.

"We were delighted that it reflected Wallasey School’s caring and supportive environment, and how talent is recognised here.

"I would personally like to thank all those who took part, from the initial auditions to the eventual stage show – they were all a credit to the school."
