Team of the year: Friends of Meols Park
The friends of Meols Park have brought so much enjoyment back to local children.
About two years ago, Wirral Borough Council removed the main play equipment from Meols Park due to health and safety concerns.
About half a dozen parents then formed the Friends of Meols Park and with Wirral Council raised over £50,000.
Roy Shuttleworth, secretary for friends of Meols park, was successful in securing a number of big money awards, including £25,000 from the lottery.
He also encouraged 10 people to abseil down a 200ft building for the park.
Thanks to all this funding Meols Park has now been totally renovated with lots of new play equipment, landscaped garden, pathways and new fencing.
It is also regularly packed with lots of children having lots of fun.
Roy said: “I’m made up we won this award, it’s fantastic because we’ve put a lot of hard work in over the last 20 months and taken a play area that was decimated and turned it into one of the best in North Wirral.
“It’s always full of children enjoying themselves and I want to thank everyone who helped.
“We hope the area will be enjoyed by generations of youngsters.”
