Champion Young Person: Laurie Cain

Laurie Cain

Laurie Cain volunteers her free time because she likes to help other people and make them happy.

The 14-year-old Woodchurch High School pupil teaches dance at S.N.A.P, a youth club which runs every Saturday morning at Woodchurch Sports Hall.

She teaches hip hop and street dance to up to 40 other children, ranging in age from eight to 18.

Laurie started teaching at the club, which is run by her mum Maurine and dad Kevin, voluntarily when she was 10-years-old.   As well as keeping busy outside school the young heart of gold also volunteered for a Bully Busting initiative at Woodchurch High.

Her official title for around a year was a peer mentor and it was her job to counsel and help other pupils who were being bullied at the school.

Laurie won a good citizen’s award in September for this work.

After hearing the news that she’d also won Young Champion of the Year for Wirral, she said: “It feels really good to win this award and I didn’t even know I’d been nominated for it until my teachers and friends told me they’d seen me in the newspaper.

“I really enjoy helping others and making them happy because it feels good.”
