Roy Shuttleworth nominated for Your Champion Awards 2009

ONE man who led a fundraising campaign has been recognised as a champion in his community.

After Meols park was dismantled by the council just before the school summer holidays a couple of years ago Roy Shuttleworth, of Hoylake, decided to do something about it.

He pulled together a great team and tirelessly fundraised to not only reinstate the park, but to provide even better facilities and an extended play area.

He engaged with the local people throughout and organised and encouraged fundraising activities, including a 200ft abseil, the Wirral Coastal Walk and even a concert in Hoylake, hosted by China Crisis.

Fiona Duckers, who nominated Roy for Your Champions Awards 2009, said: “The much visited local park was going to be left to fall into disrepair, leaving Meols without a recreational park.

“But Roy’s commitment to the area is well worthy of recognition for without his vision and efforts, the children and young people of this area would have no leisure facilities at all.

“I just want to say a big well done to Roy and his team of fundraisers.”

Our heroes and heroines will be honoured at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Friday, November 6, in Chester. To vote for yours, email newsdesk@wirralnews.co.uk
