Wirral’s Landican crematorium wants to “recycle” heat generated by cremations for fuel

A CEMETERY wants to “recycle” the heat generated during cremations to warm its buildings.

Wirral council is taking the green step as part of a £3m project to bring in new cremators at the busy Landican Cemetery, in Arrowe Park Road, Woodchurch.

The revamp of the site will also include a dust-free “committal room”, where families can watch coffins go into the cremator if they have certain religious requirements.

Landican Cemetery carries out more than 3,000 cremations a year and was told to replace its equipment to meet new government targets to cut mercury emissions.

A council report said: “The proposed cremators will be fitted with heat exchangers to recycle heat within the installations.

“The heat exchangers will also include a facility for channelling unused heat for other uses in and around the cemetery should this be required at a later date.”
