Protesters plead with council to keep school open
PARENTS and St Laurence RC School pupils past and present protested on Friday over proposals that could see the school close from September 2011.
Wirral Council is currently embarking on a consultation process after student numbers dropped below 65% capacity.
But parents of current pupils feel strongly that the school still holds an important role within the community.
Elizabeth Curran, 23, attended the Birkenhead school and now her five-year-old daughter Faith is a pupil.
Elizabeth said: “It was a really good day.
“We’re trying our hardest to get them to keep it open.
“There were probably around 60 of us and quite a few former pupils. I used to go there and so did my auntie, so she came too.
“There were loads of old pupils because they have all still got connections.”
Those in opposition to closure have until July 31 to make their views known.
A petition has been circulated and already 900 signatures collected.
Elizabeth said: “It’s not just a school, there are teachers there who taught me and my mum.
“It’s such a caring school, like a second family, I absolutely loved it.”
