Port Sunlight Village Trust launches fundraising appeal to re-build Hillsborough memorial

The area in which the memorial garden is set dates back to 1933, and is part of the original fabric of the village.

Port Sunlight Village Trust is planning to distribute leaflets outlining the appeal across Wirral and Liverpool.

Lionel Bolland, chief executive of Port Sunlight Village Trust, said: “We will fully restore the garden as soon as we possibly can.”

A 13-year-old and two 16-year- olds were arrested by police last week in connection with the destruction of the memorial.

All three were released on bail pending further enquiries.

Police said they did not believe the vandalism was football-related or a targeted attack against the memorial and its connections to the Hillsborough tragedy.

Port Sunlight councillor Steve Niblock said: “Given the shocking destruction of the memorial, I know that people will rally round to support the proper restoration of the site.”

DONATIONS can be sent to the Trust at 23 King George’s Drive, Port Sunlight, CH62 5DX.
