Campaign to help Auschwitz death camp survivor

A MERSEY campaigner has launched a campaign to help a war hero and Auschwitz survivor struggling to pay care bills.

Arthur Dodd escaped from Auschwitz four times but is now battling Alzheimer’s disease.

The 90-year-old’s condition has become so serious that he needs full time care at a Lostock care home in Cheshire.

But at £500 a week the bills are mounting up and his home could end up being sold to cover the cost.

Son Jeffrey Dodd, 62, has invested his savings into improving his parents home, and last night he told the Daily Post: “After all men like my father have done for the country, they are seeing their money ripped off them to pay for basic care.”

With the anniversary of D-Day last weekend, Mr Dodd’s heroics during World War Two are even more poignant.

Jack Moran, 78, a veteran fundraiser, said: “He sneaked back in to Auschwitz three times because he wanted to sabotage the Nazi’s gas chambers.

“He worked with the Polish partisans to blow the gas up.

“What he did deserved the Victoria Cross for bravery – he is an amazing man and this is the way as a country we’re treating our heroes?”
