At one point, there were fears the water damage had made the house too dangerous to live in.
The stress caused Mr Fletcher to suffer severe asthma attacks and Mrs Fletcher depression.
Mrs Fletcher’s son, Darren Agnew, 29, said: “It is disgusting. United Utilities keep quoting legislation which it says states it is not liable for damages for floods.”
A United Utilities spokesman said: “The flooding incident in September occurred because our surface water system did not have a free outfall to the River Birkett.
“The Environment Agency has also informed us failure of its equipment may have further elevated the river.
“We are not responsible for that equipment, but we understand the agency will be replacing it.”
