Secret Gardens of Oxton open to the public for ninth year

THE Oxton Society is celebrating its 30th anniversary by opening 30 “secret gardens” to the public next week.

The Secret Gardens of Oxton, now in its ninth year, sees visitors invited to take a look around private gardens in the conservation area.

The schedule for the event on Sunday, May 10, includes live music, children’s activities, bus rides and plant sales.

Proceeds will be divided between three charities – The Ark in Birkenhead, Shaftesbury Youth Club and Birkenhead Woodcraft Folk.

Over the years the event has attracted thousands of garden lovers from all over Merseyside and raised more than £100,000 for good causes.

Last year, £24,000 was shared between Viking Centre and Youth Club, Tam O’Shanter Urban Farm, Helplink Community Support and the Zero Centre.

Graham McLean from The Oxton Society said: “Thirty gardens is a record number, making this the biggest Secret Gardens we’ve ever had.

“Some new gardens are on the list which have never been open to the public before.”

This year a horse-drawn carriage will be taking visitors through the centre of the village during the event. There will also be Morris Dancing and free gardening advice.

Graham added: “In 2008 we had over 5,000 visitors and more people seem to come every year.

“It does depend on the weather. Last year it was warm and sunny and we’re hoping for the same next week!”

The Secret Gardens will be open from 10am to 5pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults in advance (£6 on the day). Admission is free for accompanied children under 18.

Tickets are on sale in Oxton at The Drawing Room, the Quandary Dress Agency and Oxton Village Books.
