DOWN’S Syndrome @ Wirral is asking people to consider taking on the Wirral Coastal Walk to boost the charity’s funds.
Last year the group received more than £3,600 after fundraisers walked 15 miles along the coastline from Seacombe Ferry to Thurstaston Country Park.
This year they want to raise even more money in The Rotary Club of North Wirral’s summer ramble, sponsored by Unilever, which takes place on Sunday, May 17.
All money raised funds for a support group for people affected by Down’s syndrome at the Children’s Development Centre, Gratrix Road, Bromborough, held every third Friday of each month between 1pm and 2.30pm.
It also finances family fun days and a four day play scheme in the summer holidays at Stanley Special School, Thingwall.
Charity treasurer Linda Purfield said: “At last year’s play scheme we had drama workshop providers High Horizons, a circus skills class and a disco.”
Down’s Syndrome @ Wirral, which is affiliated to The Down’s Syndrome Association, London, also take their younger members to a soft play ground with slides and ball ponds at Ragga Muffins, Chester, each year and provide a disco for the older ones, every half-term.
Last week a High School Musical three-film show was organised as some of the children find the cinema too noisy.
Linda, who has a 24-year-old daughter with Down’s syndrome, said: “Our charity was started 20 years ago by a group of parents.
“Now we have about 96 families on our mailing list.
“As well as providing activities for those who have Down’s syndrome, caused by the presence of an extra chromosome, we provide an opportunity for parents to get together, compare notes and give each other support.
“When I was first told about my daughter’s condition I was quite overwhelmed and felt very isolated, so knowing you have people around you who can share what you’re going through is invaluable.
“It shows you that having a child with Down’s syndrome is not all doom and gloom, because they can go on to achieve so much in life.
“We really appreciate people walking for us in the Wirral Coastal Walk or even just giving us donations, because it allows us to keep our charity going.”
