Wirral Council tells Liverpool not to interfere in its development plans

WIRRAL Council is to tell its larger neighbour across the Mersey to “leave us alone” over proposals to develop the borough.

Liverpool City Council has been consulting adjacent councils over its World Heritage Site (WHS) plans – which includes key views into and – crucially – out of the waterfront area.

But Wirral Council officers fear Liverpool could use this to influence or even halt development in the borough.

Key among these developments is Peel’s ambitious £4billion Wirral Waters scheme which the company says could transform the derelict dockland between Birkenhead and Wallasey into an area of skyscrapers rivalling Singapore.

But this would be jeopardised if Liverpool could object on grounds that it would spoil views out of its World Heritage Site – even though the “buffer zone” around the WHS only extends to the centre of the Mersey.
