Carole Evans, Birkenhead High School for Girls
WIRRAL’S last independent all-girls’ school will become one of the Government’s flagship academies.
The Department for Children, Schools and Families formally approved plans which will see Birkenhead High School granted independent academy status.
The Government approval means the school will open as an Academy in September.
The next stage will look at what improvements need to be made to Birkenhead High School’s facilities to fully deliver its educational vision. The initial allocation for this project is believed to be in the region of £11m.
Headmistress and principal designate Mrs Carole Evans said: “We are all delighted at this news. Our first year as an independent academy will be an exciting year for all involved.”
Birkenhead High School Independent Academy will be a non-denominational, all-through (3-19) girls’ school at the current Birkenhead High School site.
It will admit its first pupils in September, 2009, to nursery, reception, Year 7 and the sixth form as part of a phased process. It will be sponsored by the Girls’ Day School Trust.
