Bush tucker boys eat the lot

BOILED frog legs, locusts, pigs’ intestines, maggots and fish eyes were on the menu last Sunday for the brave diners at Jack Rabbit Slims, Hoylake.

The group of intrepid men took part in a charity bush tucker trial and helped raise £1,000 for St John’s Hospice.

Among the guests was Julian Davies, of Julian’s restaurant, Hoylake, who, despite admitting he has a sensitive stomach, ate every last leg and eyeball on his plate.

He said: “I have eaten some unusual things in my life while travelling and cooking.

“At a food festival in Birmingham I once had a balut, which is a fertilised duck egg with a nearly-developed embryo inside that’s soft-boiled in a shell – it was absolutely disgusting.

“I don’t intend to use anything like this or what I ate in the bush tucker trial on any of my menus.”

Joining Julian at the disgusting dining table were Lamin, Iain, Colin, Jamie, David and Pat.

Lynne Hamilton, fundraising co-ordinator for St John’s Hospice, said: “The atmosphere was electric and the audience were behind the contestants 100%.

“They were so brave and ate every single thing.

“My friend Carole and I prepared the food and we were sure they would refuse to eat it as it was truly repulsive!

“But the testosterone levels were rising and no one chickened out.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part and made Sunday’s event truly unforgettable.”

Following the success of the evening a similar event is being organised at The Shrewsbury Arms, Oxton, later this month.
