Police to treble resources in Birkenhead in crime blitz

POLICING resources in Birkenhead town centre will treble in the run-up to Christmas as officers warn shoppers to be aware of unscrupulous criminals.

Birkenhead neighbourhood inspector, Mick Blease, told the News that, alongside an increase in the number of PCSOs and regular officers, a plain clothes team will be checking anything suspicious.

Insp Blease said: “The Shopsafe operation has been running now for the past seven years and every year we are seeing a reduction in crime in the town centre.

“We increase our resources in the centre and we want people to come to Birkenhead in the knowledge that they and their property will be safe.”

Working in partnership with the police are the town’s security guards and CCTV operatives.

Insp Blease said shoppers should be particularly aware of vehicle crime.

He said: “There are unscrupulous people who will look for those who have just got some shopping, and go to the car to load the boot up before going to get some more.

“If you’re going to use your car, make sure you make one visit and make sure it’s the last one.”

If anybody does witness, or is the victim of, any form of criminality in Birkenhead town centre in the run-up to Christmas, they should either go to the Cop Shop in the Pyramids Centre or call 709 6010.
