Wirral police workers appear in court on corruption charges

TWO Merseyside police workers and six other men accused of corruption appeared for the first time at Liverpool Crown Court today (Wednesday).

The civilian police workers, Stephen Kell and Kevin Mighall, who are suspended from work, are charged, along with the others, of conspiracy to commit corruption.

It is believed the investigation by the Professional Standards division of Merseyside police relates to the awarding of contracts for building and refurbishment of police properties.

The defendants are : 51-year-old Kell, of Queen's Avenue, Meols; Mighall, also 51, of Dorchester Road, Noctorum, Clifford Elliot, 60, of Manor Drive, Upton; David Lloyd, 59, of Cinder Lane, Calderstones, Liverpool; Alan Cooper, 52, of Ambleside Road, Allerton; Alan Coslett, 50, of Hill School Road, Eccleston, St Helens, Paul Moy, 46, of Dark Lane, Lathom and Paul Gaskell, 34, of Blackmoss Lane, Aughton.

Moy and Gaskell both worked for the same mechanical and electrical consultant engineers in Liverpool and Cooper is a director of Huyton builders, Whittakers Ltd, where Coslett works.

Elliott is a director of IFS Contractors Ltd of Bootle and Lloyd is the company's chairman.

Judge David Swift further remanded the men on unconditional bail until April 17 when they are expected to enter their pleas.

A date for the trial, expected to last at least six weeks, was fixed to begin on October 13.
