Beat the credit crunch at Wirral’s Farmers Market
BEAT the credit crunch at Wirral Farmers’ Market.
Organisers say that visiting the market can not only provide shoppers with the freshest, best quality produce but also can also save money.
A snapshot survey of supermarkets near to Wirral Farmers’ Market showed that for many of the products available, producers at the market offered better value.
Chairman Anne Benson said: “There has been a perception that farmers’ markets are something of a luxury but that is simply not the case.
“For example, try cooking some lamb or beef mince or bacon from a supermarket and watch how much water comes out compared to meat from Wirral Farmers’ Market.
And the market is competitive pricewise for products - for example, half a dozen free range eggs at the market are just £1 compared to £1.52 and £1.56 at leading local supermarkets.
“Some produce is more expensive but, overall, a sample basket of food from the market costs £46.30 compared to £53.20 and £50.69.”
l The next Wirral Farmers’ Market takes place on Saturday, November 8, at New Ferry Village Hall from 9am-1pm.
It is a voluntary organisation set up to regenerate the area and its surroundings, and works in partnership with New Ferry Regeneration Group, North West Fine Foods, Lairdside Community Trust and Health Links.
It is run by volunteers, who live and work in the area and organise the market in their spare time.
