A £30m academy could replace two Birkenhead schools if plans are given the go-ahead at the end of the year.
Following the recommendation of a government report, the new "superschool" could replace Rock Ferry High School and Park High School which have falling numbers of pupils.
A site for the academy, which would offer educational facilities to rival the top schools in the country, has yet to be decided but is promised to be equally accessible for both sets of pupils.
A parent of a Park High School student, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "I’m worried about the location of this new academy - I purposely picked a school that was within walking distance of our house.
"I’m furious because my son only started at the school in September and he could face a huge upheaval in the middle of his exams if the move is approved."
Kathy Baugh, parent governor of Rock Ferry High School, said: "As a parent and a governor, whose son had the very best education available, I envy the parents whose children will reap the benefits of the 21st century facilities at the proposed new academy."
Peter Bennett, headteacher of Rock Ferry High School, has also expressed his excitement at the prospect of these new facilities and the opportunities available for pupils at an academy.
He said: "I see this proposal as an investment in our success as a school.
"It is also my understanding that all teachers and their salaries will be protected as they transfer to the academy - so it would be a positive move all round."
Cllr Phil Davies, cabinet member for children’s services and lifelong learning, said: "If this investment goes ahead, we hope it will drive up aspirations, standards and achievement, setting the benchmark for what can be achieved in urban communities."
Cabinet will meet on November 6 to discuss the latest proposal, following which there will be a period of consultation with key stakeholders.
