A 22-YEAR-OLD man appeared before Birkenhead magistrates on Friday, charged with stealing a box of matches.

David Frank Hill, who is currently serving in Walton Prison, pleaded guilty to the charge under the Theft Act 1968.

Prosecuting, Maria Corr told the court: “On June 14, the defendant and someone else attempted to steal a camper van but were interrupted, and instead stole a box of matches.”

Hill caused £350-worth of damage while stealing the matches.

He was recalled on licence and, while being interviewed by police, asked for an additional three offences to be taken into consideration.

These three offences related to interfering with a motor vehicle on January 18 in Chester Road, Birkenhead, on June 2 in Kings Drive, Thingwall, and a further offence on June 19 in Dunston Road, Liverpool.

Defending, Laura Flynn said: “He admits he came to the attention of the police with the offence on June 14, and was recalled.

“It’s certainly a low tariff offence, even with the matters heard.

“The district judge made it clear, not withstanding the fact he’s in custody, it would never amount to more than a fine.”

No application was made for costs.

Chairman of the bench, Jean Jeans, said: “The matter before us is the theft of a box of matches, but taking into account the matters raised to us, there will be a fine of £150 or serve a day in custody.

“Clearly this has been served, so there will be no fine to pay.”
