TWO men who were fishing on a sandbank off the Wirral coast were rescued by RNLI New Brighton hovercraft crew on Sunday after becoming cut off by the tide.
The hovercraft Hurley Spirit was out on a training exercise at the time and was diverted to rescue the men at about 11am.
Cliff Downing, lifeboat operations manager, said: “A beach lifeguard spotted the men on the sandbank just off the beach at Moreton and went out to help them while alerting the Coastguard.
“The Coastguard then asked us to attend to rescue the men who were up to their waist in water and in considerable danger .
“Fortunately, they didn’t need any medical treatment so we picked the fisherman and lifeguard up and returned them to the shore.”
