WORK has begun on the interior of Parkgate’s quaint sandstone church.
The “Fishermen’s Church” of St Thomas Parkgate has been re-roofed and structurally restored thanks to dedicated work and fundraising by many parishioners.
Now internal restoration has started, after receiving listed building consent in June of this year, utilising the services of local firms and selected skilled craftsmen.
This phase of the work, comprising a new central heating system, renewal of gas, water and electrical services followed by remodelling of the interior, will continue throughout 2008 and, subject to further successful fundraising, into 2009.
The grounds of St Thomas’ Church have, both before and during the restoration period, been maintained on a voluntary basis by parishioners for the benefit of the public at large.
However, more funds are required to take the church through this stage of refurbishment and redecoration so it can be use das a combined church and village hall.
If anyone would like to know more, or would like to use the building in the future for a community group, a member of the church trust can show interested parties around. Visit the website www.stthomasparkgate.co.uk or email stthomasparkgate@hotmail.com for more information.
