A SPECIAL Birkenhead couple are celebrating their seventieth wedding anniversary today.
Muriel Lawton, 88, and Jack, 92, married on July 30, 1938 after meeting each other as school children at St James School, Laird Street.
The pair raised their two boys, John, now 69, and Jeff, now 63, in Birkenhead’s North End.
Jack, a retired railway driver, and Muriel, a retired Cadbury’s factory worker, have three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John, who has been married for 48 years, said: “I hope I live to reach my platinum wedding anniversary. I think it’s amazing. It’s a different world now, people disappear from each other after having an argument.
“My mum and dad have always looked after each other and have had a very happy life. They didn’t want fame or money - they have always just been glad to have one another’s company.”
The couple and their other loved ones are celebrating this special occasion at the Grove House Hotel.
