Wirral Council in bid to secure lucrative partnership with Chinese city of Suzhou

WIRRAL Council is expected to accept an invitation to visit China in a bid to secure a potentially lucrative partnership with one of its most affluent and historic cities.

Following Liverpool’s successful partnership with Shanghai, Wirral officers now hope to set up a “twinning” style agreement with the adjacent city of Suzhou.

In May, council officers met high-ranking officials from the city who were on a visit to London.

A report to be considered by Wirral Council’s cabinet this week says: “Following on from council officers’ meetings with officials from Suzhou, the mayor of Suzhou has invited a delegation from Wirral to visit the city on September 26/27, 2008.

“They have requested the leader of the council (Steve Foulkes) attends to meet with the mayor.”
