Bomb disposal squad called in as World War 2 shell handed in to Birkenhead police station

A BOMB disposal squad was called to Mortimer Street police station in Birkenhead on Sunday evening after a member of the public handed in what was believed to be a WW2 shell.

A house clearance team found a collection of weapons and ammunition dating from the 1940s, including a signal flare which was initially mistaken for the shell, while working at the home of a man in his nineties.

An MOD bomb disposal team and a fire crew to make sure that the collection of devices, including the flare, a pistol and a large knife were safe.
