£300k investment boosts former Cammell Laird’s site

OWNERS of the Cammell Laird site, Peel Holdings says the area has been significantly improved in the last 18 months, thanks to £300,000 investment.

Working closely with a resurgent Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders Ltd, Peel says a major clearance and repair exercise is bearing fruit, with some dilapidated smaller buildings demolished while others have been brought back into use.

The investment has allowed Northwestern, soon to be renamed Cammell Laird, to go from strength to strength, including securing a £180m Ministry of Defence contract earlier this month.

Managing director of Northwestern, John Syvret said: “Thanks to the support of Peel and Wirral Council, since moving back to the shipyard the company has doubled in size, and has firmly established itself as a centre of excellence for ship repair, conversion and military refit.”

The firm now directly employs 450 personnel and has over 1,000 people working in the shipyard.

Leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Steve Foulkes said: “I am confident that by working together we will deliver an ever increasing number of jobs.”
