Wirral's shock drinking statistics

COUNCILLORS were told this week that over 50,000 people in the borough are drinking in a harmful or hazardous way.

Members of Wirral Council’s Community and Customer Engagement Overview and Scrutiny Committee also heard that numbers using specialist alcohol services in the borough have increased by 54pc over the past three years.

The shocking figures were in an annual report on the performance and delivery of customer services.

This week Wirral PCT became the first NHS organisation in the country to launch an alcohol screening and treatment service through pharmacies across the borough.

Andy Mills, head of partnership and engagement at Wirral PCT, said it was a “great example” of how a PCT can take direct, positive action.
