Walker fell 100ft to his death

A WALKER born in Wallasey died after falling 100 feet from Pillar Rock in the Lake District.

At an inquest in Whitehaven, West Cumbria coroner John Taylor recorded an accidental verdict on Thomas Hughes, 52, who became an internationally known ceramic pottery artist.

Mr Hughes lived near Cockermouth with his Japanese-born wife Shizuko, who identified his body by his watch strap after he was found with multiple fractures in Shamrock Traverse.

Cockermouth mountain rescue team had been alerted and their leader Julian Carradice found a dislodged rock from which he believed Mr Hughes had fallen to his death.

Mr Hughes had been reported missing from home.
