WORK is finally under way on the new Marks & Spencer in Telegraph Road, Heswall.
The Simply Food store, which is being built on the derelict site of the old Peugeot garage, has been welcomed by Cllr Andrew Hodson.
He said: "The site was an eyesore and the store will bring some light into the area.
"It will also add to the competition between food stores in Heswall, which can only be a good thing for shoppers."
The original proposal for the store was withdrawn by the company but was resubmitted.
Cllr Hodson said: "There were some initial issues. Residents to the rear of the site were worried about noise and disruption and I had some concerns about the increase in traffic, as it is a busy area.
"However, the highways department has assured me it will be monitoring the surrounding roads, and I have been told that any disruptions will be kept to a minimum.
"The public right of way path will be diverted during the building, but this shouldn't cause a problem.
"Hopefully, all nearby residents are happy with the plans."
He continued: "I understand the store will be finished and handed over to Marks & Spencer around February next year, and will then be opened after Easter.
"Obviously, it would be nice to have it ready for the Christmas shopping season but we want it to be built properly, so that just can't happen."
